Brownwood Art Association
The Brownwood
Art Association was organized in 1927 to create an environment where the
members are encouraged and inspired to produce and exhibit their works of art,
and to sponsor activities that promote the common good and a better
understanding between the artist and the public.
To achieve those objectives, the BAA brings renown demonstrators to its monthly meetings, sponsors a "First Thursday" reception to showcase a member artist, facilitates frequent "Muse and Merlot" events, in which participants create a painting, and encourages young artists with workshops and art activities. All activities of the BAA take place in its newly-renovated building at 215 Fisk Avenue and all are open to the public.
The Brownwood Art Association provides scholarship funds to area college students who are majoring in art. The association has donated art related books to the public library as memorials along with providing various demonstrations for the community. Many members donate their time to organize and put on the annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit and student exhibitions, as well as the Association's member exhibits.

Brown County Museum
The Brown County Museum (formerly the old Brown County Jail) is located near the Brown County Courthouse and resembles an ancient European castle in its design. It was built in 1902 by English-born stone mason, William F. Morton. The jail's capacity was designed to house 75 inmates, but that capacity was often exceeded during the days of Camp Bowie. The building has 4 stories with the third floor containing a trap door and lever for executions.
The museum maintains an extensive collection of history from Brown County, including a Camp Bowie WWII section with artifacts, photos, and POW Camp history.
Working with local Howard Payne University theatre students, the museum has hosts several live entertainment and fundraising events that highlight the various time periods in the history of the jail.

Stars of Texas
Each February
the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit hosts a juried show and artist
demonstrations, all free to the public. The juried exhibit, open to all Texas
resident artists 18 years and older, pulls artists from across Texas to enter
the competition. Two related events, the Digital Photo Shoot-Out and the
Paint-Off, draw artists for additional activities. The Stars of Texas Juried
Art Exhibit was conceived in 1999 in order to showcase the newly-restored Santa
Fe Depot, now called the Brownwood Civic and Cultural Center. The Stars
of Texas, an outgrowth of the Arts Council of Brownwood, receives additional
funding from local businesses and individuals who are interested in the arts.
