Connection to the Arts
What does the arts community in Brownwood mean to you?
I came to Brownwood as a high school graduate, later earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in studio art with a marketing minor at Howard Payne University. I’ve been participating in the art scene since then and have had the honor of learning under the instruction of talented local artists such as Carole Pyburn, Eloise Trigg, Ann Abdias Smith and informally influenced by many others.
Do you have a favorite type of art (visual art, theatre, music, dance, etc.)? Why? My favorite form of art is the visual arts, specifically painting, and pencil drawing as I’ve practiced both since childhood. A very close second would be music because music celebrates life and tells stories, much like painting and drawing.
Favorite local arts event, program, or project :
Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit is my favorite art event, as it brings together a community of diverse artists from across the state, who share their works, in so many formats, with the public. Most importantly it exposes the children and young adults of Brownwood and Brown County to a very deep art culture and education right here locally and at no cost to enjoy the exhibit!
Personal Spotlight
Personal Spotlight
Hobbies or interests outside of work and the arts :
My husband and I enjoy spending time with my family, whether searching for a vintage comic or toy, trying new fine dining experiences, celebrating holidays or going on a family vacation. I also enjoy taking on unique renovation projects with my husband.
Favorite place in Brownwood :
Morgan’s (formerly Morgan’s Gun Shop). While restoring this Brownwood icon, we dove into the history of the location. Not only is it known for being recognized as the smallest block in the world in the past, but it’s also been a gas station, gun shop, stone mason’s office, a bed & breakfast and private a residence. Tucked into downtown, it’s one of Brownwood’s most iconic buildings.
Vision for the Arts
What excites you most about the future of the arts in Brownwood?
The art park that the City of Brownwood is planning for downtown will create a vibrant outdoor space that has never been available before in Brownwood. This will be a beautiful space for all forms of art and will impact a wide variety of our residents and visitors and create a new space for festivals and events!
What impact do you hope the Arts Council continues to have in the community?
To continue to bring various quality art formats to the general public at an affordable price or at no cost to the public and green w the art scene even larger in our community. I hope eventually we can help grow a sculpture garden or a rotating collection of sculptures one day.
