  • Contestants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Each contestant will receive a plate of fresh jalapeño peppers.
  • Contestants may only eat one pepper during the first minute.
  • Contestants will then have two (2) minutes to eat as many peppers as possible, one pepper at a time.
  • Peppers must be eaten down to within 1/8 inch of the cap to be counted.
  • Contestants will not be allowed any other foods or beverages during the contest.
  • Contestants will be disqualified if they are unable to keep the peppers down.
  • Contestants cannot coat the inside of their mouths with any kind of protective coating.
    Anyone caught doing so will be disqualified.
  • The contestant with the most stems on their plate after time has been called will be the winner. Contestants will be allowed to finish any pepper remaining in their mouths when time is called.
  • Should there be a tie, contestants will be given additional peppers and one (1) more minute of time.
  • First, second, and third place winners will receive prizes.
  • ​Entry forms must be completed at the Information Table next to the Lyric Theatre by 8:30 p.m.
    ​There will be a maximum of six (6) contestants.
  • The contest will begin at 9:00.

Jalapeño Eating Contest

    Professional Homemade Salsa Contest

    • Contestants must be a restaurant, food truck, or licensed food seller.
    • All salsa must be homemade.
    • Contestants must supply a minimum of one gallon of salsa.
    • A numbered container will be provided for each entry.
      There will be a limit of one (1) entry per contestant.
    • Salsa will be voted on by the general public.
    • First, second, and third place winners will receive prizes.
    • ​Entries must be delivered to Tr3s Leches Bakery (201 E Baker)
      ​by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4th.
    • Voting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9:00 p.m.​

    Amateur Homemade Salsa Contest

    • Contestants must not be an employee of a restaurant, food truck, bar, or salsa company.
    • All salsa must be homemade.
    • Contestants must supply a minimum of one pint of salsa.
    • A numbered container will be provided for each entry. There will be a limit of two (2) entries per contestant.
    • Salsa will be judged on appearance, taste, and texture.
    • First, second, and third place winners will receive prizes.
    • Entries must be delivered to Tr3s Leches Bakery (201 E Baker)
      ​by 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4th.
    • Judging will begin at 7:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9:00 p.m.

    Window Decorating Contest

    • The 2018 Cinco de Mayo Celebration will include the following streets:
      • ​​​E Baker - from Fisk Ave to Center Ave
      • ​Center Ave - from E Baker to E Chandler
      • ​E Chandler - from Center Ave to Fisk Ave
    • Businesses must be located within the boundaries of the event.
    • A 3-member judging panel will evaluate the windows for creativity, craftsmanship, and relevance to the Cinco de Mayo theme.
    • Prizes:
      • ​​​​​​1st Place:  1-night stay for two at Star of Texas Bed & Breakfast
      • ​2nd Place:  One round of golf for two at the Brownwood Country Club
      • 3rd Place:  $25 gift certificate to Los Cazadores Mexican Restaurant
    • Windows must be decorated by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4th.
    • Judging will begin at 5:00 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9:00 p.m.

    Sponsor Form

    The Arts Council is seeking sponsorship donations to help with the expenses. The Arts Council of Brownwood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. Please make checks payable to Arts Council of Brownwood.
    • $500   Name/logo on individual 4x4 sign, Lyric pre-show ads, t-shirt, and social media posts.
      Two (2) free t-shirts.
    • $250   Name only on $250 sponsor sign, Lyric pre-show ads, t-shirt, and social media posts.
      One (1) free t-shirt.
    $500 sponsors will receive two (2) free t-shirts. $250 sponsors will receive one (1) free t-shirt.

    Vendor Application

    The deadline for Vendor Applications is April 20th.
    You will pay a flat vendor fee for the space, and you will be able to keep all your proceeds.
    Vendors will receive a special $5 price for t-shirts. Please indicate the number of t-shirts you would like to purchase:
    NOTE: The Arts Council will review all applications. Vendor Applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Electricity will be available, but you will need to provide your own heavy-duty extension cords and power strips. You are also responsible for providing a booth, tables, chairs, and anything else you might need. The Arts Council will provide general liability for accidents occurring in the street; however, you will be responsible for providing liability insurance to cover your merchandise. All vendors must have a tax ID number. A temporary number can be obtained by contacting the Texas Comptroller’s Office. It is your responsibility to know your organization’s sales tax obligations.

    The Arts Council is seeking an Entertainment Sponsor to help with the expenses for the four free performances in the Lyric Theatre by Mariachi Los Toros and the Guadalupe Dance Company. Our cost for the two groups is over 50% of our budget. Mariachi Los Toros has been with us since we started two years ago. They have always been a crowd favorite!
    For your $2,500 Entertainment Sponsorship, you will receive:
    • Name and logo on 2 individual 4x4 signs
    • Name and logo on individual slide in Lyric pre-show ads
    • Name and logo on front of t-shirt
    • Name and logo on social media ads and posts
    • 5 free t-shirts
    • Name and logo on posters
    • Opportunity to speak at Lyric performances
    • Free 10x10 vendor space
